Water Quality Lab

The Water Quality Laboratory is a state-of-the-art, NABL-accredited facility that provides advanced monitoring and analytical services in the field of Environmental Hydrology. Staffed with a highly qualified team of scientists and technical personnel, the laboratory serves as a hub for high-precision research and applied studies on water and wastewater quality. It is equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation to analyze physical, chemical, and bacteriological parameters, including major ions, trace elements, organic compounds, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and bacteriological indicators. These capabilities ensure reliable assessments that meet national and international standards, including the Bureau of Indian Standards (IS 10500:2012) for drinking water and monitoring requirements prescribed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Environmental Protection Act (1986) for municipal and industrial wastewater.
The laboratory undertakes comprehensive field and laboratory investigations of surface water, groundwater, and water and wastewater treatment systems, generating critical data to support water quality assessment, environmental research, and pollution management. It also facilitates laboratory- and pilot-scale experiments to study pollutant mobilization in aquatic systems and to evaluate the performance of various physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes for contaminated water remediation.
To support this wide spectrum of research, the laboratory houses advanced analytical instruments such as FTIR-Microplastic Analyzer System, Ion Chromatograph with Auto Titrator, LC-ICP-MS, GC-MS/MS, TOC Analyzer, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, Autotitrator Potentiometric, Research Microscope, Microwave Digester, TKN System, COD Digestion System, BOD and bacteriological incubators, and a TCLP apparatus. In addition, several high-end field instruments are available, including Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), multiparameter sondes for in-situ water quality monitoring, DGPS units, sediment grab samplers, flow trackers, and portable water quality kits, enabling comprehensive field-based hydrological investigations.
The laboratory is accredited by NABL under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for 22 parameters (Lab ID: T-5679; Certificate No. TC-9421), with its accreditation recently renewed until July 2025 (Certificate No. TC-12019). Beyond in-house research, it also provides water and wastewater sampling and analysis services for external agencies, ensuring scientifically robust and regulatory-compliant assessments.
In addition to its research and analytical functions, the Water Quality Laboratory actively contributes to institutional capacity building by organizing training programs on water quality monitoring and planning, sampling and analysis (in-situ and laboratory), advanced instrumentation, water and wastewater treatment, conservation and management of water bodies, and environmental data processing. Through its integrated facilities, the laboratory plays a vital role in advancing scientific understanding, supporting policy and regulatory compliance, and strengthening technical expertise in the field of water quality management.
